Exploitation


Remember the Afghan Girl. Nearly everyone in the Western world is familiar with this photo which graced the cover of National Geographic in 1985. The haunting eyes of this young lady, captured more than 20 years ago, captured the plight of oppression in Afghanistan. Her popularity was magnified due to the fact that she appeared time and again on TV commercials pushing subscriptions to NG magazine


Now for just $4,500, you too can have your own authentic print of this picture from the New York Times store.


I find it ironic that only in our society can we take a photo of an oppressed person and sell copies for $4,500 a pop.


Wouldn't it be great if the profits of that picture could be routed back to this lady...if she is still alive...or her family. That would be just.
Another iconic example of the oppression and exploitation of the poor.
