Sometimes, it is best to hold on loosely to things and just let go when they start slipping through your fingers. This is especially true with regard to money and power.
I think our souls are tested with regard to money and power. In our most basic human nature, our inclination is to cling tightly to those things we possess or control. We are gatherers by nature. Money, we save. Power, we crave.
Yet, both offer only the illusion of security. We cling tightly, yet, ironically, the tighter our grip the more easily money and power slip through our grasp...like water, like sand.
We don't like the feeling of stuff slipping through our fingers. After all, we are in control, right?
We don't like the feeling when something is taken from us and we have absolutely no ability to influence the outcome. It just goes...and there is nothing we can do to change it.
Sigh!
When it happens, our pride is bruised and our reaction may be to "fight this injustice." But is it really injustice....or is it actually a blessing? Is it actually God working in our lives for our good?
When it happens, we begin to worry about the future. What does this mean? What is next? What can I do about it? Can I do anything about it? You probably can't. Stuff happens. Sometimes for a reason, sometimes not. Don't stew. Be patient. Ask God to teach you through this loss.
When it happens, we get frustrated. That wasn't expected. It wasn't part of the plan. I was working so hard and depending for that to be there to help me accomplish my agenda. Well, maybe it was the wrong agenda. Maybe the way you were planning it wasn't in the cards. Maybe, just maybe, God is trying to teach you patience, perseverance, endurance, creativity....
When it happens, we get discouraged. "Why me?" is our lament. What is the line from Bruce Almighty? Something like: "God is a kid on an anthill with a magnifying glass. He can come down and help me anytime he wants, but he would rather burn off my feelers and watch me squirm!" Not the case. Maybe God is trying to move that thing off the plate to draw our attention to what he really has in mind for us.
Hold on loosely to the stuff of the earth. All this stuff can be a real detriment to your spiritual development. Money and power are deceptively attractive, yet they offer no real security or assurance. Both can be gone in an instant.
It's tough advice, but probably the best medicine: Kick the dust off your feet, look up, and move on. It's going to be okay.
