When I was a kid, the first pizza we ever had delivered was Domino's Pizza. The doughy crust, lots of cheese and great pepperoni made it a favorite for many years.
Then Domino's got cheap and ruined their pizza. The crust tasted like and had the texture of cardboard, the sauce was boring and the cheese tasted fake.
Now, Domino's has changed the recipe again, and my family was pleasantly surprised last night. We had a large pep and a medium pep, ground beef and onion.
I hadn't even realized Domino's had re-invented it's pie. Haven't seen any advertising. But all three of my boys indicated they were aware. I guess I watch the wrong channels on cable. Domino's is promoting the "new" pie online. I'm linking to their YouTube video below.
I'm not one for many food reviews, but here's my take:
- The crust: They brought the doughy crust back. And this time, it's covered with garlic butter. The texture is great. The garlic butter is yum. The dough holds the pizza ingredients very well and is very complimentary to the overall experience.
- The sauce: The memo on the updated pizza box says they added some hot pepper to the sauce to give it an extra kick. To tell you the truth, I didn't sense that much of a kick. The sauce, to me, had a good tomato paste taste with a bit of sweet and salt. If there was a red pepper kick, it went right over my taste buds. In my opinion, the way to ruin a good pizza is to over do the sauce. These pies had just the right amount.
- The cheese: I don't know what they did with the cheese, but it didn't taste fake or processed like recent past Domino's pizzas had tasted. It was very good.
Overall, you can tell Domino's has done quite a bit of focus group product tests to get this relaunch right. To me, it taste more like the older Domino's pizza, the one I grew up with. The big win is that the crust is back!
We had sworn off Domino's for a while, but the general consensus around the table was pretty positive last night all around.
Domino's is back on the menu at our house--for now. We still like Benny's the best, but with Papa John's absent from the area, we have another pizza option in the 'ville.
